A list of photographs explaining the check dams

A check dam under construction.
Stones are spread on the stream-bed. Then they are covered with soil. Then next layer of stone is covered with soil. Like this, layer after layer is laid until the wall reaches the targeted height.

A stream is “checked” or “blocked” by a wall connecting the two banks of the stream. Dam is built in summer time when the stream is dry. As monsoon starts in June, water is filled in and a pond is built.

Water overflows from a dam’s overflow point. Then a small canal – barely one foot wide and one foot deep – is made to direct the water in desired directions. It can go as far as one kilometre and irrigate several hectares of land.
